Margòt skirt _Let’s make the pattern together

The Margòt skirt is straightforward to make, and in no time, you will be able to create a beautiful and striking skirt, suitable for many occasions.

WHAT DO YOU NEED

To create this skirt you need:

  • about 180 cm of fabric. I have chosen a cotton linen blend fabric.

  • sewing thread.

  • an elastic band 3,5 cm high and as long as your waist circumference minus 5/6 cm.

LET’S MAKE THE PATTER TOGETHER

The first thing to do is measure your hip and waist circumference. These will be the measurements on which you will base the construction of your entire skirt.

Be careful with the measurement of your hip circumference, as you won’t be able to pull the skirt up over your hip otherwise!

The skirt is considered to be made of rectangles: three rectangles, each increasing in size, stacked on top of each other.

Considering that each rectangle is for the front and the back of your skirt, they should be cut twice in fabric.

So, I recommend folding your fabric in half and then cutting.

The first rectangle, the top one, is the least gathered, meaning it is closest to the measurement of your hip circumference:

  • as wide as half of your hip circumference plus 3 cm (1 cm for ease and 2 cm for seam allowances);

  • high about 21 cm plus 9 cm for the waistband _ final waistband high 4 cm; 2 cm for seam allowances (total height 30 cm).

Specifically, in my case, I have 94 cm of total hip circumference, so I create a rectangle wide 50 cm [47 cm (half hip circumference) + 1 cm (ease) + 2 cm (seam allowances) = 50 cm].

The second band is usually wide about twice the size of the first, depending on how much volume and gathering you want to give your skirt; higher or as high as the first (I cut it 30 cm high). I create a second rectangle for the second raffle 80 cm wide and 30 high.

The third band is wide about twice the size of the second, depending on the total height of the fabric. For the third band in my skirt, I cut two times a rectangle 150 cm wide and 55 cm high.

Of course, given the height of the fabric (usually about 148/150 cm), you will be able to cut two pieces of the first and of the second band in one go; for the third band, you will need to cut it twice.

Below, a summary of the pattern of the skirt, which you will soon find in the free pattern section of the site.

Next I am thinking about creating some videos that cover its sewing!
